DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE IFS OFFICERS:-

·        The principal responsibility entrusted to the officers of the Indian Foreign Service include foreign policy planning that involves looking onto the immediate crisis situation with other countries but it also involves planning and formulating policies for achieving long term objectives.

·        Today there is a greater need for coordination within the Ministry and also with other ministries like, Commerce, Finance, Industry, and Defence. It means IFS officers have a key role in all the Ministries.

·        Diplomacy is widely accepted as the art and science of negotiations.

·        An IFS officer is required to discuss, persuade and negotiate with the government of the country where he serves. It is a challenge that gets national attention and officers’ work is recognized by everyone.

·        Protecting India’s national interests in the country of his/her posting

Opportunities:-

• IFS officers have the opportunity of working on deputation in the UN General Assembly and other UN bodies such as the UNESCO, UNHCR, World Bank, Centre for Human Rights (General), Commonwealth Secretariat, SAARC Secretariat, etc.
• Besides these, IFS officers are sent on scholarships to several universities of repute in several developed and developing countries.
• So the service gives an opportunity to interact and work with the best brains and most powerful in the world.

·        Second Secretary (promotion upon being confirmed in service)

·        Ambassador/High Commissioner/Permanent Representative

Salary is same almost same as the IPS, IAS at the entry level.
